The paper of the day talks about the impact of gully erosion, water-induced soil degradation due to heavy rainfall, runoff, deforestation, and uncontrollable urbanization. India has committed to achieving Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) by 2030, as per the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 15.3). Badlands reclamation alone is not enough—there must be a national strategy for gully management, climate-adaptive land use, and erosion control. Also, the study suggests that District-level spatial mapping and targeted policies are essential for India to meet its 2030 LDN goals.
