Transition from irrigation with untreated wastewater to treated wastewater and associated benefits and risks
The paper of the day reviews the shift from irrigation with untreated wastewater to treated wastewater, analyzing the benefits, risks, and necessary mitigation strategies. The study highlights that wastewater treatment improves health and environmental safety, also it introduces challenges such as soil carbon loss, pollutant release, and potential reductions in crop yields. A holistic and sustainable management of wastewater and wastewater irrigated soils within the interconnected cycles of water, carbon, nutrients, and other elements, requires an integrated assessment of multiple goals in addition to SDG 6 “Clean water and sanitation”.
